Bilayer

The cell membrane is primarily made up of a bilayer of phospholipids.

Cholesterol

It is found only in animal membranes and functions to moderate the membrane's fluidity and stabilize it.

Protein channel

It is a transmembrane protein that allows the transport of specific ions or substances across a cell membrane.

Integral protein

These proteins interact with the hydrophobic portion of the bilayer through their membrane-spanning hydrophobic regions, which are fully integrated into the membrane structure.

Glycoprotein

It is a protein with an attached carbohydrate that helps structure, immune system response, and protection of cells and organisms.

Glycolipid

Glycolipids are formed when lipids and carbohydrates join together. They help maintain membrane integrity, are receptors for biomolecules, and aid in self or non-self recognition by the immune system.
