Saprotroph Fungi

Organisms called saprotrophs live on or in non-living organic matter, secreting digestive enzymes into it and absorbing the products of digestion. They play an important role in the decay of dead organic materials. These fungi are also called decomposers.

Organic matter

Saprotrophic fungi are the primary plant litter decomposition agents in many terrestrial habitats because of a potent combination of lignocellulolytic enzymes that break down complex organic molecules.
